Yup, seems the latest update is paving the way for a complete DL version of SingStar according to the splash screen when you try to fire up SingStar Viewer.
You'll also notice when you fire up the proper game (after updating it) that there is now an option in the carousel to "import disc songs" but before you get too excited, it's just the same old "disc swap" that the "select" button used to do, just made easier to identify for those who will have the DL version of the Client later.
I guess this means that SingStar will be moving to being more of a "service" than the current disc based versions allow, which probably means we won't see any more disc releases (which is a little sad) but hopefully it means we may start seeing better content in the bi-weekly (mostly) updates.
I guess all eyes will be on the first set of releases after the DL client is launched.

I for one would be okay with a service based arena as opposed to discs. I have found that with the Sing Star Store my song list can be that of my choosing. Mind you the folks at Sing Star do (did) a pretty good job with their selections within the disc versions but let's face it, there are always going to be some songs on a disc that just don't tickle one's fancy for a number of different reasons.
In fact, if I could delete songs that came with the disc, there would be a handful that I wouldn't bat an eye in doing so merely because some songs just aren't my cup of tea. With a service, I buy what I want based on what I (or others in my abode) like.
I do wish they would have given an ETA on this shiny new Viewer (or whatever it is that they're planning on releasing) on the splash screen though. Nonetheless, I am looking forward to the changes and Sing Star's continued success.

Free? But what exactly does the "complete SingStar experience" mean? Is all the DLC like songs, ect free to use?
I'm guessing the "base game" will be free but to fund it songs will be paid for. Nothing official from Sony yet so we'll have to wait and see how it pans out.

Putting my guessing hat on......
The application itself will be free to download with possibly one free songpack containing a few feature songs to get people started. The rest will be as they are now and cost to download. Alternatively possibly a new Mic pack will be launched that will contain download codes for some more packs. The latter guess is only because it seems most stores appear to be selling off the current mics for cheap which would be in line with a new release.
Hopefully it means that the bi-weekly song lists will get a bit of a boost with the new life that will be breathed into the service.
The above is all purely guesswork, but either way, it'll be good for the franchise as a whole when it previously felt like it had been ditched for that dancing rubbish.
/looking forward to seeing what emerges from all this.
